In an echo of the Wet, rain poured down onto Townsville this morning, bouncing off the streets while Vilis and I completed our regular weekend shopping and purchased a few extra items for our planned two-day excursion to Paluma Range National Park, leaving tomorrow. When we stopped in at the Mitre 10 hardware store, I noticed garden seeds, and in a sudden longing to plant and care for some of my own fresh food, I bought seeds for lettuces and spinach, beets and dill and beans. A store employee assured me that late April was the correct time to plant those seeds and showed me the store’s stock of bedding plants. From those I chose two tomato plants, a tray of mixed herbs, another of yellow zucchini, and two trays each of pink-and-white-striped petunias and lobelias. I hoped the annual flowers would add some splashes of colour to our predominantly green yard.
On our return to the house, I pulled out more weeds and began working the dry, compacted soil in two of the perennial beds. Although I enjoy the rather cluttered greenery of our yard, which attracts birds and butterflies and effectively screens us from our neighbours, sunny spots not already inhabited by vigorous plants are rare. Thus, my garden will require much thinking before planting.
